Importance of Sleep

Sleep is vital for good health and wellbeing. It is essential that you get enough sleep as it can help to protect your physical and mental health as well as enhancing your general quality of life. It is important to understand the negative consequences lack of sleep can cause. Many believe exercise and nutrition are essential for optimal health and happiness, however many do not realize that sleep is just as important if not more important.

Sleep plays a crucial role in your physical health as when you sleep your body actively heals or repairs itself, it is also believed to affect puberty and fertility. Prolonged sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. It also increases your risk of diabetes and even obesity. More alarmingly, sleep deficiency has been linked to depression and suicide.

While sleep is important for people of all ages, it is extremely important for children as sleep supports growth and development. Essentially, sleep allows the brain to prepare itself for the next day. It forms new pathways which help promote learning and memory, in fact studies have shown that a good night’s sleep improves ones learning ability and problem solving skills. It also helps you to make good decisions, encourages creativity and helps you to be able to control your emotions and stress levels.

Lack of sleep will obviously leave you feeling lethargic and more irritable, but it can also be damaging your immune system which relies on sleep to stay healthy. If your immune system is weakened, your body is less able to fight off common infections which is why you are more likely to come down with a cold when you are tired and run down.

In summary, people who do not get enough sleep are less productive, take longer to complete tasks, make more mistakes and have slower reflexes. They are more susceptible to infections, and have an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease and stroke just to name a few!
